Drake HallDrama Scholars (Form 2, 3, 4 and Lower Sixth)

The Drama Department believes that all students are capable of succeeding, usually to a far higher level than they anticipate, and that this success is achieved through giving them responsibility for their own learning, with the teacher available in whatever role is appropriate to facilitate and guide this success.

The Department feels strongly that Drama is a unique learning medium, where the students are able to demonstrate their ability to move towards independent learning through using their communication skills, co-operative abilities, ambition, motivation and imagination to create high-quality, polished pieces of work.

Inter-personal skills come to the fore during the creative process and the consequent pieces of work are often of an exceptional standard, as proven by the examination results achieved and pupils’ commitment to, and enjoyment of, Drama.

Students show tremendous enthusiasm in Drama lessons, take responsibility for their own success, and develop skills and understanding which will benefit them for life after Pangbourne.

The Department is based in the former Music School, which has been newly-refurbished for Drama, and there are two teaching spaces – one of which is a studio theatre which is regularly used for intimate performances, including A2, GCSE and Form 3 practical work.

The Junior House (Dunbar - Forms 1 and 2) and College Productions take place in a Proscenium Arch Theatre, Drake Hall, and there are two wardrobe stores and a props store.

The Department has a part-time theatre technician and scripts for student use are readily available in the Drama building.

Drama examinations are offered at GCSE (following the WJEC board) and A Level (following the Edexcel board), as well as the Trinity College London Drama exams at Grade levels 1-8.

A new addition to the Drama calendar is the National Theatre Connections competition in March which sees Pangbourne pit itself against the very best youth theatre organisations across the country.

The Department runs trips to theatres, such as the National Theatre in London, on a regular basis to fuel Drama students’ interest in the subject.

Each February, the Department puts on its College Production which is the Drama highlight of the year and, in recent years, has seen acclaimed performances of ‘Little Shop of Horrors’, ‘The Wiz’ and ‘Grease’.
