It is very hard to imagine life today that doesn’t make use of computers, the World Wide Web, email or social networking. In fact, the top ten jobs in demand today didn’t exist in 2004 and many of the world’s biggest companies have only been around for 10 years.

The incredible fast pace of change and development embodies what the Department is about. The ICT Department at Pangbourne wants its students to have the key skills necessary to be successful in the job market.

By the time students leave Pangbourne, they will know how computers, the Internet and networks work, written many computer programs and also be able to create websites, graphics and use software effectively.

The Department has dedicated classrooms for Computing and uses virtualised desktop PCs, running the latest software, and use Raspberry Pi computers for programming. A range of resources exist for students to look at the physical technology and find out what they do, with several students using this knowledge to build their own computers.

Students in Forms 1 to 3 follow a broad curriculum that introduces a range of different Computing skills but spend most of their time learning to write algorithms and then program their solutions.

At the end of Form 3, students can opt to study at GCSE level (following the OCR board).

A Level Computing (following the OCR board) is also offered to students in the Sixth Form. Students are encouraged to develop their knowledge through trips to relevant business and academic institutions.

Students can attend the Programming Club which is provided for pupils to extend and develop their programming skills as well as exploring other areas of the computing world. Keen ICT and Computing pupils can also contribute to a blog, commenting on the technology they see and hear about.
