Music & Music Technology

The Music Department at Pangbourne aims to kindle latent talent and give all students the opportunity to develop the skills required for the lifelong appreciation and enjoyment of music in all its guises.

It is hoped students will foster a passion for a subject which enrichens and enlivens people of all cultures and all places, cultivate a deeper understanding of a diverse range of music and develop enquiring minds and critical thinking skills.

The Department is based in the £2m, award-winning Harding Communications Centre which includes a recital hall, practice rooms, recording facilities, classrooms and an ICT suite.

The Centre – which was opened in 2012 – houses the College’s Steinway pianos, which gives Pangbourne its prestigious All-Steinway School status. There are also Steinway pianos located in Pangbourne’s major concert venues, the Falkland Islands Memorial Chapel and Drake Hall.

All students are given opportunities to develop their skills by the experienced Music Department with pupils in Forms 1-3 attending curriculum lessons and many continuing on at GCSE level (following the AQA board).

At A Level, students can take Music (following the OCR board) or Music Technology (following the Edexcel board).

There are numerous opportunities to join College bands and ensembles, a few of which are listed here (link to Music in Outside the Classroom).

Instrumental tuition is available in all orchestral instruments, rock instruments and the voice and the Department organises a busy programme of informal and formal concerts and, masterclasses and workshops by visiting musicians.  Individual tuition is available in all orchestral instruments, piano, voice, electric guitar, drum kit, bagpipes and music technology.

Every year, Pangbourne is represented at the Annual National Service for Seafarers at St Paul’s Cathedral in the presence of royalty and the College Choir will join forces with the Pangbourne Choral Society and Southern Sinfonia in 2017 to celebrate the College’s centenary.
