The annual United Kingdom Mathematics Trust (UKMT) Senior Team Maths Challenge was held at Highdown School in nearby Caversham on Monday 13 November.
The Pangbourne team, comprising of Jack Rogers (Upper Sixth, Harbinger), Philip Garnier(Upper Sixth, Hesperus), Maddy Hart (Lower Sixth, St. George) and Kenny Xu (Lower Sixth, Hesperus), took on 25 other local schools as they pit their wits to solve mathematical problems.
In the Group Round, teams chose to work either as a group, in pairs or individually to solve a number of complex questions. This was followed by Crossnumber in which teams work in pairs to complete a numerical crossword style exercise. All four members of our team had previous experience in this style of competition and this held them in good stead as the maths involved varied from fairly difficult to fiendish.
In the final round of the day, the Shuttle, teams divided into pairs to answer a series of four questions in which the solution to each question is required to solve the subsequent. The team displayed key communication, problem solving and teamwork skills throughout the challenge, securing tenth place overall - the finest result to date for Pangbourne in this competition.
